The Long Lost Habit 

In the world of technology and online games, the habit of picking a book and reading has vanished from our generation. social media and online games have taken over our lives that reading books is a heavy load of work. It has become fascinating to hear that someone completed a book unlike how it used to be a few years ago. 5 years back then school children especially the high school children used to read a book overnight and excited to exchange it the next week. Now the time has changed where if you keep a few books at your house for the children to read, it would be left unturned. It strains the eyes of the children to read whereas it doesn’t when they play pubg over the night. The charm of reading a book is like sitting under a tree where gently breeze flows.

Why Read in this pandemic?

In this Pandemic, many of us are stranded at home with the least to do and so much time. We are often on our phones, surfing the news related to the pandemic and many other disasters happening around the world. it is often stressful to be having to go through this new normal. Adapting to a new phase of physical distancing and having more time to yourself than ever is new normal. It is often stressful to get back to reading habits when so much is going around but it is also one of the best things to do in a pandemic.
Here are the reasons why you should start your habit of reading:

Break from the screen

According to research from Rescue Time, one of several apps for iOS and Android created to monitor phone use, people generally spend an average of three hours and 15 minutes on their phones every day, with the top 20% of smartphone users spending upwards of four and a half hours and this figure could be different for in this pandemic. We might be spending half of the day on the phone. so, we can give a break to our eyes and start reading.

Feeling of accomplishment

When you are stuck at home especially school children in our context, reading is the best way to feel accomplished and get the sense of victory in having done something for yourself .so haven’t caught a book in a while, then it is time.

Escape from reality

No matter what’s going in the world, a good book can provide comfort, insight, and a welcome escape. It is another form of entertainment that we can seek while staying home. Now maybe the time to finally dig into that epic novel you’ve had on your shelf forever, revisit an old favorite, or try something out of your reading comfort zone.

Reading before bed can help in sleep

Creating a bedtime ritual, like reading before bed, signals to the body that it’s time to wind down and go to sleep, according to the Mayo Clinic. Reading a real book helps to relax more than zoning out in front of a screen before bed. Screens like e-readers and tablets can keep you awake longer and even disturb your usual pattern of sleep.

Reading a book can help you to escape from the stress and worries of the world and get engrossed in the world of the author’s imagination.

An online poll of over four thousand people from a representative sample in the UK revealed that regular readers for pleasure reported fewer feelings of stress and depression than non-readers, and stronger feelings of relaxation from reading than from watching television or engaging with technology-intensive activities.

Reading can boost your brainpower

Not only does regular reading help make you smarter, but it can also actually increase your brainpower. Just like going for a jog exercises for the cardiovascular system, reading regularly improves memory function by giving the brain a good workout.

Connectivity in times of Pandemic

19% of readers say that reading stops them from feeling lonely. This is backed up by a study analyzing social connectedness which found that reading books significantly reduces feelings of loneliness for people aged 18-64.

How to start reading?

Are you the one not able to pick up those stacked books and flip through the pages. Are you the on stuck as to how to start the habit? Here are a few ways to start your journey of becoming a reader :

• Borrow a book

Borrow a book from a nearby library or a friend. It drives you to finish the book before the given deadline.
• Set time
Set a time to read. Read for 15 mins for the first week and then increase it every day.
• Share the book you read with someone
After reading the book, share what you read with someone interested to listen which helps you to vocalize and also feel accomplished.
• Don’t take it as a workload
Don’t feel it as a burden to read. Reading is a gentle way to refresh your mind and bring in the warmth of literature and imagination.
• Set a goal
Set a goal to read at least a book in a month and this will push you through.
• Follow Book Pages on social media
Some of Facebook and Instagram have some awesome pages which update the book list. Follow those pages to help yourself get an update. One example of an Instagram page is called “bookaholics” on Instagram which updates on books.

Join a reading group

If you can join a group where everyone reads and shares would help you to read more. I am particularly looking for these groups to join the community of readers.
